Hi-tech ship to tackle ocean sustainability.

Hi-tech ship to tackle ocean sustainability.

In 2021, the world will see the largest superyacht—595ft and a crew of 30—launched in Norway. But this is no ordinary superyacht. The research expedition vessel is a cutting-edge oceanographic research station. Nicknamed REV, the vessel will accommodate up to 60 scientists who will collaborate to clean-up and dispose of plastic waste, while studying marine life and the world’s vast oceans.

REV is the brain child of a Norwegian billionaire, Kjell Inge Røkke, who earned his money in shipping and offshore drilling. In an interview with Aftenposten, Røkke said he was grateful for the opportunities the sea had given him and planned to give back bulk of what he’d earned to the community.

While travelling the globe, REV is designed to collect plastic floating on the ocean’s surface. The ship has the capacity to suck up and melt approximately 907 kilos of plastic a day. The vessel will be managed by World Wildlife Fund Norway.
